Financial Assistance

The provision of any financial support for adoptive families, including allowances or one-off payments, are the responsibility of the placing Local Authority if an allowance was agreed within the first 3 years at the time your child moved in with you. If there was no allowance agreed, and it is three years since your child was placed this will be assessed by the Local Authority in which you live. If a family wishes to request new financial support Adopt Thames Valley workers will be able to support with this, but the Local Authority will always have the responsibility to agree and provide this and to do any means testing necessary.

The Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Fund Support Fund (ASGSF)

provide funding to meet the therapeutic needs of some Adopted or Special Guardianship Children up to and including the age of 21 (25 if they have had previously an EHCP). Only children who were Looked After by the Local Authority prior to the Special Guardianship Order being made are eligible for the ASGSF funding. This fund comes from national government and is currently guaranteed until March 2027. Presently the fund provides an annual allowance of £3000.00. This could be for a multi-disciplinary assessment and or therapy. The ASGSF has stipulations in respect of the type of therapy provided, such as therapy cannot take place outside. This rules out certain types of therapy such as Equine Therapy. If you feel that this may be something that your child would benefit from accessing, the first step is to contact our Help Desk Service.
